The recent war and subsequent occupation by US forces has had a horrific impact on Iraq. While Iraqis try to rebuild in a post-Saddam era, progress is hampered by food and resource shortages. Anti-US sentiment is rife and civil unrest ranges from peaceful protests to gunfire, with casualties continuing to be sustained by both civilians and the military. Infrastructure - where it exists - is unreliable, and stability seems a long way off. Even with a press pass, travel to the region is limited and not advised.
