Learn2 Travel Alone Safely (continued)
Step 2: Take control of your belongings

Once you've read up on your destination and booked your travel plans, it's time to consider how you'll transport yourself and your belongings safely.

  • Pack light, since you won't be relying on a companion to watch your luggage when you need to ask a quick question or use the bathroom. If you have expensive-looking luggage, borrow or buy some shabbier--yet still reliable--pieces that won't target you as a wealthy tourist.

  • Keep your valuables in a money belt or pouch under your clothes. It's much more difficult for a thief to grab something from under your jacket than from your pocket. Also avoid wearing a "fanny" pack, as it will undoubtedly target you as a tourist.

  • If long rides make you sleepy, make sure your belongings are secure before you doze. Use your purse or backpack as your pillow, and tuck larger bags away in positions that would cause you to wake up if anyone were to move them.

  • In crowded areas, carry your pack, purse, or camera in front of you with your hand on the body of the item rather than the strap. A thief can easily cut the strap, leaving you with just that.
