Learn2 Travel Alone Safely (continued)
Step 1: Research your destination

When traveling alone, the more you know, the better your chances will be for having a successful, safe trip. Being safety-conscious starts when you choose your destination.

  • Study guidebooks, paying close attention to your chosen area's political and cultural scene. This will help you figure out how the locals treat people of your gender, race, or age. For your first solo trip, consider visiting a place with a similar culture or language to your own.

  • Research your destination's transportation system to learn the main types of public travel. What's the safest way to go?

  • Do research to find accommodations in safe, well-populated areas. Travel agents can be helpful in this type of research, and some first-time solo travelers may do well in hostels where the atmosphere is generally friendly, safe, and full of others also traveling alone.

  • Try to get a general sense of your destination's business standards. Are prices generally fixed, or is barter more the norm? Where is it acceptable to negotiate (meals, shopping, accommodations)?

  • Talk to solo travelers (either in person or online) who have been where you're going to get a sense of how they were treated.
