Learn2 Travel Alone Safely
(4 steps)

Party of one

The travel bug has bitten again, and this time you want to take a trip that's different from previous vacations. Whether you're driving 40 minutes down the road, or taking a 20-hour flight, consider traveling alone. It may seem scary at first, but the advantages of going alone can add up to a unique, memorable experience.

Be bold, take that step, and go solo. A 1997 survey by the U.S. Travel Data Center reported that 9 million people planned summer vacation trips alone. Of course, a solo trip isn't something you can decide on overnight. It takes a lot of research and personal reflection to see if you can handle the added complexities that accompany any solo traveler.

Before you begin

Guidelines for staying safe differ from destination to destination. One area or country may have problems with discrimination against a gender or ethnic group, while in another, the danger could come from economic factors, like extreme poverty. Aside from research, the most important safety tool for solo travel is simple common sense--be aware of your surroundings, keep a level head, ask questions if you're confused, and if a situation doesn't feel right, keep moving.
