Step 3: Obtain an application

Once you've determined your business site, it's time to apply for the license. There are a couple of ways you can obtain an application.

Download. Our society gets more wired each day, and many cities are doing a great job keeping up. You can get the URL for your city site by calling your city office (listed in the government pages of your phone book), or try typing your city's name preceded by the words "City of" into an Internet search engine. The home page will generally have a section about small businesses where you'll find details about obtaining a business license application. In many cases, you'll be able to print one out without leaving your desk.

Go to the city office. If your city doesn't provide applications online, a visit to your local city office will get you everything you need. Business license applications are generally kept behind the counter, so ask for one rather than perusing the table covered with bus schedules and recycling information.
