LEARNLETS
What's the best way to avoid being cheated when traveling by taxi?
1. Ask your hotel concierge what the regular rate for taxis is, and how much it should cost to get to your destination. This way you'll be able to tell if your taxi driver is charging too much.

2. Scout out a reasonable route before you get in the taxi, and bring the map with you. This way you can be on the lookout for cab drivers who take you too far afield before driving to your destination.

3. Choose a cab from an established taxi company--they're usually better at sticking to the rules. Once again, ask someone at the hotel for the names of reputable companies.

4. Find out if taxi drivers in the area charge extra during rush hour, or for baggage or extra passengers. If it's not the custom, you might want to ask the driver about these things before you get into the cab to make sure he or she doesn't charge for them.

5. Have small bills on hand so the driver doesn't tip him or herself when making change.
