How can I replace a lost U.S. passport while I'm abroad?
Losing a passport is a serious matter. You probably won't be able to cash traveler's checks without it--and you won't be allowed to cross borders without it.

1. Report the loss to local police and get a copy of the police report. They may not be able to do anything, but U.S. officials will be less suspicious of your application for a new passport if you can document that you tried to get the old one back.

2. You'll need two forms, DSP-64 and DSP-11. You can get these from U.S. embassies or consulate offices.

3. You'll need proof of U.S. citizenship. A birth certificate is the best document for the job, unless you're a naturalized citizen, and then you'll need a certificate of naturalization or a certificate of citizenship. Also, if you have an expired passport that you can have sent to you, that will work.

4. You'll also need proof of identification. This can be a U.S. driver's license, certificate of naturalization, or government or military ID. If these are unavailable, you will need to find someone over 18 who has known you for at least two years. This person can accompany you to the embassy or consulate and sign an affadavit swearing that you are who you say you are.

5. The least of your problems will be securing two recent photographs, 2 inches by 2 inches (passport size), of your full face. They can be color or black and white.

6. It will cost you about $60 (U.S.) to replace a lost passport, and it will take a few days. If you need it faster than that, you'll have to prove it by presenting airline tickets or some other documentation. Rush service will cost extra.
