Lately I've been having problems with the air conditioning in my car. How do I check the A/C to make sure it's functioning properly?
Check your car's manual to locate your A/C compressor, then trace the entire path of the two hoses leading out if it. You should be looking for two things: cracks or other signs of decay in the hoses or tubes, and an oily substance around the joints where the hoses meet other parts. Even the smallest leak can shut down your entire A/C system.

If you don't see any damage, the culprit might be a low refrigerant level, which can trigger a safety mechanism which shuts down the A/C. If you suspect this, have your local service technician test your levels.

Finally, the problem may not be with the A/C at all. Rather, it might be the result of a blown fuse (if so, you would probably have electrical problems elsewhere in the car). Locate your fuse box using the manual and check the appropriate fuses.
