What do the long line of numbers and letters printed on tires mean?
It's basically a code for tire's particular qualities. For example, if you read P205/75R1487S, it would mean the following:

P = Passenger car
205 = Tire width in millimeters
75 = Aspect ratio (ratio of height to width)
R = Radial (the type of tire tread), as opposed to all-season
14 = Wheel diameter, measured in inches. This is essential for appropriately sizing a tire
87 = The load index, which is a code for the maximum weight the tire can handle at its maximum speed--the larger the number, the more the tire can handle
S = The speed rating; ratings of S and T are lower (for standard tires), while a V or Z rating is higher (for racing tires)
