| | Vaccine therapy
Anti-melanoma vaccines contain weakened melanoma cells or certain chemical substances found in melanoma cells that can be injected into a patient to try to stimulate the body's immune system to selectively destroy active melanoma cells. Clinical trials are testing the effectiveness of treating patients with advanced melanoma with vaccines.
Gene therapy
One promising new approach to treating melanoma involves adding certain genes to the cancer cells to render them inactive or vulnerable to therapy. Clinical trials testing these gene therapy approaches are underway.
