| | Leukemia is a cancer of the blood-forming tissues, the bone marrow, liver and spleen. It is characterized by the uncontrolled growth of blood cells. It begins in the bone marrow, but can spread to the blood, lymph nodes, the spleen, liver and central nervous system or other organs. In leukemia patients, the bone marrow stops producing normal blood cells and the patient's white blood cell count becomes elevated.
