Childhood: Retinoblastoma                   More info on this condition
 Introduction
Retinoblastoma is cancer of the retina, the nerve tissue lining the back of the eye that enables the eye to see. About 250 to 300 children are diagnosed with the disease in the United States each year. Although it may occur at any age, 80 percent of cases are diagnosed before age 5. In about 70 percent of patients, the tumor occurs in just one eye.

Children may be born with retinoblastoma, but are rarely diagnosed at birth. About 94 percent of children with non-metastatic retinoblastoma are disease-free five years after diagnosis.
