| | Childhood cerebral astrocytoma is a form of brain cancer that develops from astrocytes. Astrocytes are cells that nourish neurons and form scar tissue when the brain is damaged. About half of all childhood brain tumors arise from astrocytes. About 25 to 40 percent of childhood central nervous system tumors are cerebral astrocytomas. Cerebellar astrocytomas account for 10 to 20 percent of central nervous system in children (see summary).
Cerebral astrocytomas are found in the cerebrum, located at the top of the brain. It controls balance and motor activities such as walking and talking.
