| | Tumors are classified based on the type of cell in which the tumor originated (if this is known) and the degree of malignancy. There are four grades, with 1 being the most benign and 4 being the most malignant. Grades 1 and 2 are referred to as low-grade, while grades 3 and 4 are considered high-grade.
The most common types of brain tumors in adults are astrocytic tumors, meningiomas, pituitary gland tumors and a benign tumor called acoustic neuroma. In children, astrocytic tumors and a group of malignant tumors known collectively as primitive neuroectodermal tumors are the most common forms.
