| | There are certain risk factors that may increase a person's likelihood of developing anal cancer, these include:
- Age: Most people with anal cancer are more than 50 years old.
- Virus: Infection with the human papillomavirus (HPV) increases anal cancer risk.
- Anal sex: Unprotected anal sex can increase the chance of HPV infection, and thus the risk of anal cancer.
- Smoking: Chemicals from tobacco can get into the bloodstream and increase one's risk.
- Anal fistulas: Abnormal openings in the anal area can increase the chance of having anal cancer.
