Inside The Closer's Explosive Finale!
by Michael Logan
The murder room on The Closer will earn its name when two people are shot to death there during tonight's season finale (airing at 9 pm/ET on TNT). The plot finds deputy police chief Brenda (Kyra Sedgwick) teaming with her FBI beau, Fritz (Jon Tenney), on a case involving a mobster in the witness-protection program. The wiseguy's wife has been killed, and so has one of the FBI agents assigned to protect them. The investigation leads to even more carnage — right in the presumably secure LAPD squad room. "I guess you could say our murder room will be more aptly named than ever," previews series creator James Duff. Pressed for more details, he invites viewers "to look very carefully at the first act of our first season, where you had a dead suspect and a dead officer on the floor of a warehouse, and an informant we didn't know much about. That will be echoed — actually exploded — in the last act of this season. "Sometimes when you solve a murder, you end up creating the circumstances for another one," he adds, cryptically. This could be a real career-killer for Brenda, but fans won't have to wait until Season 3 starts next summer to see the fallout: In December, TNT will air a two-hour Closer special that picks up where the finale left off. "At that point, Brenda will be on paid administrative leave and fighting to keep her job," says Duff. Of course, this wouldn't be The Closer without a domestic crisis. During tonight's chaotic finale, Brenda's cat, Kitty, will run away. "She blames it entirely on Fritz," Duff says. "This will be a real ‘Aha!' moment in their relationship."
