"WHILE GOSSIP among women is universally ridiculed as low and trivial, gossip among men, especially if it is about women, is called theory, or idea, or fact," said the radical feminist Andrea Dworkin.

OK, SO I wonder - is this next bit "low and trivial" or "theory or fact?" I am a woman, but not all of you out there reading this are. Well, you decide.

The inside skinny on the new Jennifer Aniston/Vince Vaughn photos is that "somebody" close to one or either actor set this up - with Jen n' Vince's knowledge. It was "time" for the story to break, but naturally, neither star wants to actually say the words "Sure, we're fooling around." Two grown single adults, but heaven forbid they confirm a perfectly natural thing. Anyway, it seems a nice match. Vince is very much the anti-Brad. (Jennifer has had her hard-bodied golden boy; now for something earthier. And probably, funnier.)

DENIS LEARY, the charismatic "Rescue Me" star so unfairly ignored by Emmy-voters, will host the Fifth Annual BASH for New York's Bravest on Nov. 2 at Capitale. The Leary Firefighters Foundation sponsors the event and proceeds will go to uniformed fire departments affected by Hurricane Katrina. Call 212-343-0240 . Jacqueline Bisset, still one of the world's great beauties, has split after 11 years with her boyfriend, Emin Boztepe. But she has her work to keep her warm. She's currently onscreen in "Domino," is wrapping "Stepping Up: Save the Last Dance 2," in which she plays a former ballet dancer, and later this year, will decorate "The Physical Education of Girls" and "Summer Solstice" . IT WAS raining cats and dogs the other night in L.A. At the Chateau Marmont, Hollywood's hottest young screen queen Lindsay Lohan dashed outside every few minutes to smoke (puffing is not allowed inside.) She ended up soaked to the skin, but just had to have that nicotine fix . AND SPEAKING of smoking, how times have changed. On the Sept. 30, 1957 issue of Time magazine, Edward R. Murrow was pictured with a cigarette in his hand. It would probably never happen today . SHARON STONE joins Denise Rich on Nov. 14 in New York City for The Angel Ball, Rich's annual benefit for the G & P Foundation for Cancer Research. Patti LaBelle, who lost her three sisters to breast cancer, will be honored for her efforts to battle the disease. Call 212-254-6677 . MARISKA HARGITAY, the "Law & Order: SVU" queen, will co-chair with her husband, Peter Hermann, when The Young Patrons Society's "Different Faces of Lincoln Center" event happens Oct. 25. This group tries to diversify Lincoln Center audiences. And take a gander at Mariska and Peter in the new issue of InStyle. Hargitay all glammed up, displays her hostess skills . PARIS HILTON, according to the British papers, has "had enough" of New York and L.A. and is seeking a flat in London's Chelsea. But have New York and L.A. had enough of Paris?

"SO, THAT'S what 84 looks like! Well, I can't wait! Bring it on! Look at her! She's gorgeous!"

That's how comic actress Jackee Harry reacted when she got a gander at Miss Jane Russell, still splendid, at the David Gest-produced Hollywood bash called "The Party." This was an evening of vintage stars performing, or just being. Nancy Wilson, Smokey Robinson, Freda Payne, Gloria Gaynor, Mickey and Jan Rooney, James Ingram and Angie Dickinson were among the seasoned throng.

As divine as ever, Angie says she is busy taping DVD commentary on her "Police Woman" TV series of the '70s. "I think it holds up, and it's been great fun and I like the idea of a new audience, a new generation appreciating it." Angie, who has fascinated many men in her time, says her current throb is . David Letterman. "Everybody should love him! His segments with animal guy Jack Hanna alone should be put on DVD." Letterman has never been my cup of tea. But I might re-evaluate now that he has Angie's seal of approval. The actress, who returned a huge advance for her autobiography some years back, still says "no" to the idea of telling all - or even some. And there's a lot she could tell.

When my West Coast legwoman Cathy Griffin approached David Gest, he said, "I'm sure Liz is going to rip me. But all I remember are the many wonderful hours with Liz and Liza." Hey, guess what, David, me too! I never saw any bad behavior from anybody. I thought you were a wonderful producer for Liza. I was sad when that marriage didn't work out. What happened after the split seemed hugely unnecessary. That's all. (Drop those ridiculous lawsuits, David.) And, though it became a poster event for excess, the actual wedding party of Liza and David was the best party I have ever been to. The wedding, with Liz and Michael and "The Kiss" was over the top, but the celebration after was just right.

David will produce extravaganzas for Jane Russell and Dionne Warwick next year.

"WHAT'S THE difference between a terrorist and a pop star?" "You can negotiate with a terrorist." Madonna tells that one on herself in her new documentary "I Am Going to Tell You a Secret."
