Speaking of impossible tasks, imagine trying to inspect and index the entire World Wide Web.

Can't be done, most experts would agree. All you can hope for is to concentrate on the really important stuff.

George Nimeh, vice president of search and special projects at iWon . com , thinks he has found a better way to select and present search results.

You might know iWon as a place that promises to give away prizes to random visitors. But the site also wants to be a place for serious surfers to do their work.

First, the site promises not to corral surfers within the iWon domain. If search results point users off their site, that's where they will go.

Secondly, iWon is drawing from a variety of search techniques and giving searchers plenty of choices.

Inktomi, which formerly did searches for Yahoo, now is on the iWon team providing general search results. Also available are results from Moreover.com, which monitors 1,200 news sources and updates its index every 15 minutes.

Other partners due to show up soon include TV Guide, STATS Inc. for sports data, Fact City and LookSmart, a service that inspects 1.8 million sites and sorts them into 170,000 categories.

"iWon's philosophy from the start has been to pick the best-of-breed partners, and we think we've done that," said Nimeh.
