And then there are those Internet sweepstakes Web sites like Bill Daugherty's iWon.com. This Internet search engine gives away $10,000 a day and one million a month simply for using the service.
"All the world class marketers like Coke and Pepsi hold sweepstakes in order to draw product sales," Daugherty explained. "So what we've done is married two ideas, a world class search engine and a chance to win a lot of money."
And so far, things at iWon.com seem to be working -- it launched in October and is now the fifth most trafficked site on the Web.
But simple things like a nice house and car are exactly why Daugherty is so excited about his iWon.com site, which is heavily supported by advertisers. He came up with the concept one afternoon while munching on a hamburger.
"I've had a chance to talk to each of our million-dollar winners," he said. "I don't think the money changes everything, but it does take off the day-to-day pressures and allows them to do more of the luxury-type things."
And now that being able to afford a home in San Diego seems to be something of a luxury itself, it doesn't seem likely that this big money craze will go away anytime soon, no matter how unlikely the odds are.
Let's say it together: one million dollars.
