When it comes a Web site's reach, or the number of unique visitors attracted, Yahoo!, AOL and MSN are longstanding leaders among Web portals.
But a new study from marketing consultant NPD Group, Port Washington, N.Y., says user-satisfaction tells a different story. The firms study tracking use of search and portal sites reveals that among more than 27,000 users queried, the most satisfactory portal was iWon.com , a 9-month-old site and newcomer to the 3-year-old study.
Ranked first or second in 20 of the 21 categories of user satisfaction, iWon.com topped Yahoo!, AOL, Excite, Lycos, MSN, Netscape, Alta Vista, Ask Jeeves, and others. Users voted it No. 1 for latest information, enjoyment, appearance, ability to personalize, security, ease of e-commerce, and other features.
Jeff Moulton, an analyst with Reston, Va.-based PC Data, said iWon has attracted increasing traffic October. "But what is impressive is that in October their reach was 5.6 percent. In June, it was 17.3 percent," he said. That compares with Yahoo! and its 60.7 percent reach in June, followed by AOL, 51.2 percent, and MSN, 48.2 percent, and Alta Vista, 24.8 percent.
"Iwon has done a fantastic job of promoting itself and moving up the ladder," said Moulton. It rose from 87th in the rankings last October to 17th in June.
To attract visitors, the site features a sweepstakes that gives away $1 million a month. Users can win cash by simply using the sites search, e-mail, news, or shopping functions.
