The Scoop

A database and a dream

The 1988 brainchild of seven database engineers, Object Design served up data management systems to a global clientele. The Burlington, Massachusetts-based firm is now the leading vendor of object-oriented programs, which break computer code into self-contained blocks and provide quicker access to certain types of data, including information found on the World Wide Web. In January 2000 the company changed its name to eXcelon Corporation. The new name is to indicate the company's expansion into business-to-business solutions, though its object data-management products are still used by more than 40 percent of corporations that utilize such systems.

A record year

The company's ObjectStore line, introduced in 1990, allows customers to customize types of data including images, free text, and audio for financial systems, software applications, telecommunication applications, and commercial web sites. Other products include eXcelon, a data server in XML language for building web applications and ObjectStore Personal Storage Edition Pro, a suite of "small footprint" embeddable databases that can be used to prototype ObjectStore applications. In 1996, Object Design went public, and began a restructuring program that included layoffs and other cost-cutting measures. Since then, however, the company has had banner years, and announced record sales and revenue for 1998. Object Design boasts a high-profile client list, including Southwest Airlines, British Telecom, Lucent, and GTE.

A new name and a new direction

Along with the name, eXcelon unveiled their new B2B Integration Server which lets companies interact with any partner or e-market over the internet. eXcelon's new eSolutions products are based on the B2B Integration Server. Allowing companies to share processes online gives them access to new markets, increased revenues, and greater control over operations. eXcelon is seeking to entirely eradicate old school manual processes like phone, fax, and paper mail communications. The company's B2B technology consists of its Integrations Server, B2B Portal Server, B2B Partner Server, and Xpress. In June 2000 eXcelon introduced its B2B Alliance Program, which combines inter-business processes to such an extent that they operate as a single virtual corporation. Members of the Alliance Program include such brand name businesses as Arthur Andersen, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Oracle, and Sun Microsystems. These online solutions are largely made possible by eXcelon's acqusition of Transformis L.L.C., the makers of XSL Stylus. XSL enables the transformation of XML (eXtensible Markup Language) into HTML and other types of XML so that companies can exchange information over the internet.

Our Survey Says

Employees are fiercely loyal to this up-and-coming computer firm. According to one insider, "You could not make a better decision than to work for Object Design." A growing company, employees note lots of opportunity for advancement, chanting the mantra "Being a 'B' player at ODI is better than being an 'A' anywhere else." Although employees are "competitive and driven to success," the company culture is relaxed. One source notes, "ODI is a family, not just a team."
