The Scoop

Symbol: raising the bar (code)

Founded in 1975, Long Island, NY-based Symbol Technologies has grown to become a global wireless mobile computing powerhouse. After getting its technological feet wet with the first handheld laser barcode scanner, the company subsequently moved into the mobile computing industry with handheld terminals that integrate bar code laser scanning. The company focuses primarily on mobile and wireless data transaction systems, and has built itself into a global leader in mobile data management systems and services. Today, there are some 10 million Symbol bar code scanners, mobile computers, and LANs in use worldwide in the retail, government, manufacturing, health care, transportation and logistics, education, and postal industries - in fact, the company has agreements with roughly 50 private and governmental postal operations worldwide to supply handheld devices and services to postal carriers.

The company has kept itself busy in the past two decades redesigning its product line and upgrading existing scanner technology. In the '80s the company introduced the world's first Hand-Held Laser Scanner, which made old, clunky fixed-station scanners a thing of the past. Later, Symbol designed and introduced the first handheld computer system with an integrated bar code laser scanner and digital radio. The company's LRT helps retail, factory, and parcel delivery workers to scan and wirelessly communicate in real time with a host terminal. As a hearty huzzah for its achievements, in 1999 the company received the National Medal of Technology, the nations highest honor for technology innovation.
