Yankelovich Partners has its eye on you! Since its founding in 1958, Yankelovich has specialized in social research. The company examines consumer patterns and their effect on businesses in order to guide marketing strategy for clients. The firm's main tool is its MONITOR, an annual survey that has, since 1971, tracked the attitudes, values, beliefs, lifestyles, and behaviors of American consumers. Subspecialties of MONITOR include African-American, Asian-American, Hispanic, Gen X, environmental, Canadian, and young European consumer groups. Yankelovich also has a variety of programs in its arsenal. POP MONITOR profiles allow companies to determine just how useful celebrities would be in endorsing their products. The CnXn (created in 1996), meanwhile, permits specific, follow-up questions for subjects of MONITOR surveys. If attitudes are changing toward computer users and Generation Xers in this country, Yankelovich may deserve some of the credit. The company was the first to create an accurate profile of on-line users, its Cybercitizen survey, in 1995. Early on, Cybercitizen surveys suggested the rich retailing potential of the Internet and Web - and they spoke no lies! Yankelovich has also published an analysis of the perspectives of the three most prominent American generations. Gen Xers will be glad to know that, contrary to slacker stereotypes, the survey found them hard-working, ambitious, and entrepreneurial. While the study gained enough notice to be published in Time Magazine, amazing discoveries are a daily occurrence at Yankelovich.
Yankelovich lists all of its present openings at its Web site or www.yankelovich.com/career_opportunities.htm. The company considers itself a "Life-friendly" place; as such, it offers opportunities like part-time scheduling, job sharing, and telecommuting. Yankelovich's rainbow of perks includes medical and dental benefits, 401(K), short term and long term disability insurance, life insurance, a health care reimbursement plan, a dependent care reimbursement plan, tuition reimbursement, paid holidays and vacation, and paid sick and personal time. The company also engages in several civic projects, philanthropic programs, athletic activities, and holiday festivals and picnics. To apply for a job or learn more about a specific position, you must email Yankelovich. An email link is available on the employment section of its site. The company also offers internship opportunities and conducts college recruiting at more prestigious colleges and universities in the U.S. One insider reports: "People at the company do recruit from campuses; they also do referrals. Internally, there's compensation offered for bringing in new employees. There are basically two business lines: MONITOR and custom. These are the two groups that do most of the campus recruiting." Reports on interviews vary, but most insiders admit that interviews "aren't too scary." Explains one source: "Depending on the job you are applying for, there might be one or two half hour sessions involving technical questions. The rest of the interviewing process is generally more relaxed."
Always stimulating, sometimes fun Many insiders are pleased by their company's "intellectually stimulating" and "occasionally fun" work. While "days are always diverse and demanding," the work load "fluctuates, leading to hours that range from 40 hours one week to 80 the next." Yankelovich sources also gripe about clients who are "very demanding." In terms of demographics, the company "is very good about hiring and promoting equally among men and women, and fairly good about hiring minorities. While the employee population is mostly - but not all - white, Yankelovich values talented people above all else." Another insider agrees: "You will find that the market research industry employs a lot of women and Yankelovich is no exception. In fact, they have more women than men; and as such it might be safe to assume that the environment is not biased." Insiders are also pleased with the "business casual dress code." Mixed on money In term of compensation, sources say, "The pay is satisfying, though not exceptional for the industry." One insider is a bit more bitter: "My advice would be to work there for a few years, and then get a better paying, less stressful job somewhere else." Not everyone at Yankelovich is so discouraged, however. "If you're into marketing research and you have the right drive, Yankelovich is a very good place to get started," opines a contact, "both for the value of the brand on your resume and for the experience you will get." Another agrees: "Yankelovich is a great brand. It is one of the most well-known research companies in the country and the work we produce is top-notch."
