The Scoop

Strat and operations

Who is the child of the Mercer Consulting Group and the Marsh & McLennan Companies, Inc.? Why, it is William M. Mercer, Incorporated. William M. Mercer, a strategic and operational human resource consulting firm, consists of almost 13,000 employees. With offices in 125 cities in 34 territories and countries, the firm has gained prestige for its core specialties: actuarial services and employee benefits, compensation, and communication.

History

The Mercer Consulting Group got its start in 1937 as the employee benefits division of Marsh & McLennan, Inc. By 1975, the Group had become a wholly owned subsidiary of Marsh & McLennan. William M. Mercer is one of three firms in the Mercer Consulting Group (the other two are Mercer Management Consulting and the National Economic Research Associates [NERA]). Having already established itself as a major player in employee benefits consulting, William M. Mercer is also tackling investment and risk management. William M. Mercer has offices in virtually every area of the world, from Hong Kong to Hungary.

Recent developments

In 1998 William M. Mercer acquired the U.S. compensation consulting practice of KPMG, an accounting, tax, and consulting firm. Also that year, it developed a Midwest Human Resources Realization (HRR) practice. The practice is designed to "help clients generate greater value from their human resource function." William M. Mercer already provides services for its HRR clients from New York, Philadelphia, and Seattle.

In March 2000, the company acquired Delta Consulting Group, changing the name to Mercer Delta Consulting LLC. Delta brings such heavyweights as Xerox, Lucent, Bristol-Myers and Chase Manhattan into the William Mercer fold. Around the same time, William Mercer also announced that it was expanding its presence in South America, particularily in Columbia and Venezuela by teaming with DeLima Marsh to form DeLima Mercer Consultoria Ltda. This is in addition to the company's existing presence in the region with its ten offices in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, and Venezuela.

Getting Hired

Visit the "careers" section of the William Mercer Web site at www.wmmercer.com for all employment information. Because William Mercer is a worldwide company, you must first scroll down the "Location" list and choose a country. After doing so, you will be able to search for specific jobs in that nation. You can refine your search using key words and city/practice area preferences. For each position, William Mercer lists a description, a list of requisite skills and experience, and credential requirements. Presently, the company does not offer online resume submission. However, for each job opening, it does list the contact information of a recruiter, who can be contacted for questions and further information.

Insiders suggest that the "typical interview" will follow a specific procedure. "First," says one source, "there are campus and job fairs (where job candidates deliver their resumes). Second, there are phone screens with recruiter. Third, candidates have first round interviews in the office - these last four to five hours. Successful candidates have second round interviews, which also last four to five hours." Another insider comments, "I don't think the interview process is a breeze, but it isn't terribly stressful either - depending on how you interview, I guess. The format ranges from technical questions, which are analytical and tough, to sharing experiences about yourself and testimonials from the staff."

Our Survey Says

Promotions aplenty

A fast-growing global firm, William Mercer features "excellent promotional opportunities," according to insiders. Says one, "There are plenty of career paths to choose from. You can be very mobile within the company." Job postings are "sometimes accessed through frequent inter-office email messages." With no formal hierarchy, sources say "promotions are based on individual performance and drive, not necessarily seniority."

You reap what you sow

William Mercer fosters "an informal culture, with flexible hours," although many employees arrive for the regular "9 to 5 shift - and then some." Dress code varies by location, although it "tends to be formal, with casual Fridays." Since Mercer is "human resources and employee benefits" consulting firm, it comes as little surprise that it offers "excellent benefits, including health, 401(K), pension plan, and stock options."
