The Scoop

The child of a merger between Decision Focus Incorporated (DFI) and Aeronomics Incorporated, Talus Solutions was formed in 1997. Not very long ago, Decision Focus was a small consulting company specializing in revenue management ("making sure that companies sell the right product to the right customer at the right time for the right price"). When, following the new fashion of corporate blending, the two companies consummated their relationship with a 1997 merger agreement, the now-named Talus Solutions became a company with more than 300 employees. Its odd new name - which means "gold beneath the soil" - replaces the company's former placeholder name: DFI/Aeronomics. As former DFI chief Dr. Robert Phillips mentioned in an interview with Red Herring, the name represents how clients "recover additional prift from their existing assets."

Numerous changes in the air

Since the merger, much has changed, including the corporate hierarchy. Former Aeronomics head Robert Cross is now Chairman of the new company, while Thomas R. Madison serves as president and CEO. Before the merger, DFI and Aeronomics were each successful in revenue management. By combining their capabilities, the two firms seek to develop innovative and original strategies that will boost them to the top of the field.

Concentrations

The company follows where DFI left off - helping businesses make smart pricing decisions. Using technology and business processes, Talus provides pricing and revenue management solutions to a variety of industries. A pioneer with revenue management in the airline and hospitality industries, Talus is extending this concept to areas such as manufacturing, telecommunications, and computer hardware. New CEO Tom Madison, who joined the firm from Computer Sciences Corporation, is leading a reorganization of the firm to help grow the business and develop strategic alliances.

Getting Hired

Talus displays its current job listings on the "Employment Opportunities" section of its web site or www.talus.net. The firm is actively seeking people in management science and software development, among other fields. The firm invites candidates to submit resumes online using its "online resume builder."

Talus holds recruiting events at various universities amd stresses that candidates should be enthusiastic about using computers and leveraging information technology.

Historically, successful candidates have been well versed in management science (optimization, decision sciences, probabilistic modeling, economics), software development and information technology (C++, RDBMS, SAS, Windows, UNIX, GUI, among others), and business process development.

Our Survey Says

The kingdom of numbers

Numbers, numbers, numbers. Across the board, our insiders at Talus cite a need for constant and accurate quantitative crunching. "We tend to look for people with fairly extensive skills in applied math or industrial operations. You should be good with software, math, or both," says one consultant. What does one do with all these digits? "We specialize in helping big industrial companies automate their quantitative decision making," remarks another consultant. "For instance, we work with rental car companies to forecast demand and appropriately adjust inventory."

Scarcity

Of course, to be able to use one's mathematical wizardry, one must first show it off in an interview. "Getting in is tough. The final interview requires a technical presentation and also a case interview that is conducted here in our office," reports one insider. "In general, we try to get a good feel for your technical skills." Those hoping for ab interview should be warned that the stakes are higher at the college graduate level. "The firm doesn't hire very many people straight out of college," states one insider. "But," that insider states charitably, "the few that I know have found [the workplace] very rewarding."
