Wessels was founded in 1986 to provide value-laden information and analysis to institutional investors, who could then act on that information via Wessel's efficient trading department. From its central location in Minneapolis, Wessels focuses exclusively on the technology, healthcare, and consumer areas of the economy. At the center of the firm is its Research department, which feeds ideas to Wessels' Corporate Finance and Trading departments. The Research department currently follows approximately 120 stocks in 12 sectors, including headlthcare information, internet technology, medical devices, restaurants, specialty retailing, and wireless communications. The firm's Corporate Finance department manages debt and equity offerings (both public and private) and provides fairness opions and merger & acquisitions advice to small and mid-size companies. Wessels' Sales & Trading department is committed to providing liquidity for the firm's corporate clients. Recent clients include Ascend Communications and Damark International. In the volatile banking and securities industry, Wessels has nonetheless managed to show a profit in every quarter of its history, with an ever-increasing capital base.

Wessels employees are upbeat about the firm - it is reportedly a "very positive place" where "people look forward to coming in to work." "Everyone works really hard," say employees, but "they play hard too. Free time is usually just as busy as work time." "The corporate culture is very different from Wall Street" at Wessels; for one, dress code is business casual all summer, and on Monday and Friday the rest of the year. The relaxed attitude is "very noticeable, and makes coming to work enjoyable on a daily basis." In a small company like Wessels, says one employee, "everyone is appreciated. Soon after I started, I knew everyone in the office, and they knew me." Employees work hard -- "a job in corporate finance means 80-100 hours a week" but they are "well compensated." "The firm is proactive about hiring women and minorities." Women make up "a fair half" of employees, with minorites "fairly" well-represented; as one worker points out: "I can't say there are a lot, but we do live in Minnesota."
