The Scoop

A subsidiary of Salomon Smith Barney, Atlanta-based Robinson-Humphrey is an essentially autonomous investment bank and brokerage that targets the underwriting of midsized companies. Founded in 1894 as a municipal bond firm by Roby Robinson Sr. and William Humphrey, Robinson-Humphrey expanded to be one of the largest brokerages in the Southeast. The firm was sold to American Express in 1982, and later sold to Sanford Weil's Primerica. Because of Weil's string of acquisitions in the 1990s, the firm is now a subsidiary of Salomon Smith Barney (which is, of course, a subsidiary of Citigroup). Through all of its changes, Robinson-Humphrey has continued to operate essentially autonomously.

These days, Robinson-Humphrey, which has a reputation as a genteel firm slow to change, is aggressively trying to expand its corporate finance business. As detailed in an extensive Wall Street Journal article in 1998, the expansion is being led by Thomas Tracy, who became the firm's CEO at the beginning of 1997. Aside from increased hiring to support the firm's underwriting, M&A and private capital raising business, Robinson-Humphrey is pursuing several strategic changes. These include using traders to make markets for the securities Robinson-Humphrey underwrites, which the firm hasn't done in the past. The firm is also making a push to lead-manage offerings rather than settle for co-managing roles. Perhaps most importantly, the firm is looking to expand beyond what has traditionally been a regional focus. With this expansion, the firm has been undergoing a tumultuous reorganization that has seen many senior bankers opt for early retirement. In the summer of 1998, the firm's former president, Roby Robinson III, the grandson of founder Roby Robinson, retired.

Getting Hired

Like most investment banks, Robinson-Humphrey conducts on-campus recruiting. Candidates generally submit cover letters and resumes and undergo one round of interviews followed by a round in Atlanta. Also like other I-banks, Robinson-Humphrey offers a summer internship program for analysts and associates.
