The Scoop

Janney Montgomery Scott Inc. began in Philadelphia as Montgomery Clothier & Tyler in 1907. Walter Janney joined the firm in 1911, so when Montgomery, Clothier and Tyler left the firm in 1921, it was renamed Janney & Company. A series of mergers and acquisitions brought the estranged Montgomery and Scott back into the corporate fold and, in 1971, Janney Montgomery Scott began anew. In 1978 JMS acquired Hoppin Watson, along with the establishment date of 1832 and the second-oldest seat on the NYSE. In 1982 Janney Montgomery Scott, Inc. became a Penn Mutual Company.

Our Survey Says

You won't find a rigid bureaucracy at JMS. Employees say that the people are "a pleasure to work for, if not a little too easygoing." Some may consider this a perk, as a laid-back atmosphere is a rarity in investment banking. The hours for most employees run about 9 to 5, which is exceptionally short for the investment banking business. Some employees complained that "minorities have been underrepresented in the past," but that the company is taking steps to increase diversity in its hiring policies. The entry-level salaries tend to be "a little low" for the industry standard.
