A can-do kinda company Crown Cork & Seal Company, Inc. is the world's leading manufacturer of packaging products for consumer goods. If it fits in a box, oozes from a bottle, or squirts from a pump, 50-year-old Crown Cork & Seal has it all wrapped up. The company's products include metal cans for food and beverage, plastic packaging for health and beauty products, and a dizzying array of caps, closures, pumps, and dispensing systems. Much of the company's success is due to John Connelly, the company's longtime CEO who passed away in 1990. When other can manufacturers jumped on the 2-piece aluminum can bandwagon, Connelly held on to existing 3-piece can technology. The competitors floundered and CC&S survived, debt-free, well into the 1980s. Who needs investment bankers? In the 1990s, CC&S has acquired dozens of competitors with combined revenues well in the billions - and completed most of the transactions without the help of investment bankers. The company's growth-by-acquisition strategy has sparked an increase in net sales from $1.9 billion in 1989 to $8.3 billion in 1998. In addition, CC&K has invested in new manufacturing innovations, such as polyethylene terephthalate, or PET (doesn't sound too cuddly) plastic containers. Canning workers Financial difficulties, however, have forced CC&S to reconsider its expansion. The company's international focus has proven costly as recent currency fluctuations, a strong dollar and the economic slowdown in Asia forced the company to squeeze costs. In late-1998, the company announced it would lay off 2,700 workers (7 percent of its workforce). In 1999, the company gave up Golden Aluminum, which it had acquired in 1997, and it sold its composite can business. Summer 2000 saw an additional 1,150 layoffs. Although CC&S purchased a Polish can manufacturer in July 2000, more cost-cutting policies are expected in the future.
