Building a name for itself
Founded in 1972, BE&K ranks among the largest design and construction contractors in the U.S. The company provides construction, engineering, and project management services for firms in a wide range of industries, from oil and gas to pharmaceuticals and biotechnology. In the early 1990s, BE&K began a new environmental services company with CRS Sirrine Engineers 'CRS Sirrine-BEK Environmental Services' that provides cost-efficient high-tech solutions to air and water problems for industrial manufacturing companies. BE&K has been widely recognized as an industry leader in providing a progressive work environment, including ground-breaking on-site training facilities and child care centers. Thanks to the progressive approach, about 10 percent of the company's on-site construction workers are women, compared with the industry norm of about 2 percent.
All about strategy
BE&K has continued to expand its influence worldwide through contracts in 11 foreign countries. In 1999, BE&K announced a joint venture with Bechtel Corporation to pursue international pulp and paper markets. The joint venture extends BE&K's offices into South and North America, Europe, and the Asia Pacific region. BE&K is also expanding its company domestically with the 1999 purchase of North Star Communications Group Inc., a telecommunications and engineering company. BE&K hopes to better serve its BE&K Telecommunications customers through the acquisition.
