The Scoop

Cleaning dirty socks from way back

Maytag introduced its first washing machine - a hand-cranked tub model - in 1907. By 1911 Maytag was selling an electric model, and the one-millionth unit rolled off the production line in 1927. Maytag began producing clothes dryers in the 1950s, and the company soon added kitchen appliances, dishwashers, and trash disposal units to its product line. Today, Maytag's appliance brand names include Jenn-Air, Magic Chef, and Admiral, and its Hoover vacuum cleaners are the leading sellers in the United States. Its Blodgett subsidiary makes commercial cooking equipment, and the company sells washing machines in China with a Chinese partner, Rongshida.

Some airline tickets with your vacuum cleaner?

In the early 1990s, Maytag was a company in trouble. It had attempted to break into the European market in 1989 by offering airline tickets to people who bought its Hoover vacuums, an ill-fated idea that cost the company $72 million. By 1995, the company had sold its European and Australian assets. The company also shut down 15 product lines, leaving only seven.

A simple idea: think green

But the company did learn one thing from its European venture. Front-loading washing machines, the type found in many commercial laudromats, had long been popular in Europe because they used less water and energy. By 1997, Maytag was ready to introduce such a washing machine to the American market. The product has been a smash hit. Its $1,100 Neptune washing machine convinced Best Buy and Sears, which sell a third of all appliances, to sell Maytag machines. In 1998, sales of the Neptune washers helped Maytag to its most profitable quarter in its 91-year history. Thinking green has led to plenty of green: the company to increased profits by 17 percent in 1999.

New CEO Lloyd Ward has not had an easy time in his short tenure at the top of Maytag. Slowing sales have ravaged the company's stock price, and Maytag is looking at possibly outsourcing some of its administrative jobs to PriceWaterhouse Coopers. Maytag remains the object of persistant takeover rumors, with Swedish manufacturing giant Electrolux AB mentioned most prominently.

Getting Hired

Maytag does not post corporate job openings externally. Applicants should submit a resume to the corporate headquarters, which will keep it on file until an appropriate opening becomes available. In addition, Maytag conducts some interviews on college campuses.
