Founded in 1943 in Philadelphia - where it is still based today - the Hay Group began as a side project for Edward N. Hay, the head personnel officer at First Pennsylvania Bank. His first big engagement, a contract with General Foods to evaluate 450 management jobs in 1945, let Hay quit his job and devote himself to his nascent "people and jobs" consulting firm full-time. Today, the Hay Group has kept their focus on human resources, while also expanding into e-business and information business consulting. In 1997, the Hay Group introduced the Hay PayNet, the first interactive, online compensation information system. With the advent of e-business consulting, the Hay Group has developed several more tools to help companies manage their "people needs," including emotional intelligence programs and a training resources group. The company also helps Fortune compile its annual list of the 100 Best Companies to Work For.
