The Scoop

Managing knowledge every day

Greenwich Associates provides research-based consulting to leading commercial banks, investment banks, brokerage firms, bond dealers, investment managers, and other major institutions. At last count, Greenwich Associates worked in 100 major markets for professional financial services. Greenwich is now at the forefront of one of the latest fads in management consulting knowledge management, or as Greenwich calls it, "the art of informing, advising, and advocating action."

Serving the financial community, thoroughly

There is a reason Greenwich Associates attacks its financial consulting jobs with unusual gusto – its clients are the leading firms in the financial services industry. Since its 1972 founding, the Greenwich, Connecticut-based consulting firm has built a reputation for strong client relationships, experienced consultants, and in-depth and complete research. Annual research efforts consist of more than 40,000 interviews in 16 languages conducted in 61 different countries. Greenwich shuns the word "survey," considering its research "more of a census, since we try to talk to 100 percent of the market."

(Very) long-term clients

Over 95 percent of Greenwich's work is with continuing clients. Greenwich has maintained some relationships for over 20 years – perhaps why the consultancy likes to say that "the clients are the firm." The firm emphasizes that the clients come before the firm, and the firm comes before the individual. The firm is proud that many of its directors have stuck with Greenwich for 10, 15, or even 20 years each. Greenwich counts among its clients big names like ABN Amnro, Credit Suisse First Boston, Deutsche Bank, Fidelity, Fleet Bank, Goldman Sachs, J.P. Morgan, Nomura, PaineWebber, Salomon Smith Barney, and Vanguard.

Getting Hired

Greenwich Associates looks for hard working and dedicated individuals for a variety of positions. Research associates must have a bachelor's degree or equivalent experience, strong organizational skills and analytical abilities, and top-notch communication skills. Visit the "Employment Opportunities" section of Greenwich Associates' web site (www.greenwich.com) for details on job opportunities. Send or fax resumes to Human Resources – the fax is (203) 629-1229.

Greenwich hires about three MBA associates per year; most associates are hired with a good chance ob becoming partners in the pint-sized firm. Greenwich prefers that its hires have two to four years of experience in financial services or financial service consulting organizations. Research associates are hired out of college; foreign language skill is a major asset for this position.

Our Survey Says

Going abroad – but stuck in Connecticut at home

Greenwich Associates is described as "a little on the conservative side," though consultants note many firms are even more stringent. In fact, the firm recently went from business dress to business casual. One contact reports being happy with the company and the people, although he notes that he would prefer New York to the firm's suburban Connecticut locale.

Hard hours for great rewards

Research associates at Greenwich are said to "put in long, hard, demanding hours at jobs that are somewhat administrative in nature." Associates "shouldn't expect to do a lot of consulting right away – that takes a long time, and a lot of associates never get there." However, hard workers are usually rewarded by "getting into a plum business school or starting a great financial services career." And if one makes partner, "they have the opportunity to go on client visits to big financial firms and meet with the big cheeses there."

A very small firm

The firm is "really small. Only about 140 people work here," reports one insider. And don't expect much company, because "[Greenwich] is privately held and fairly unique in what it does, so there is little likelihood of a merger anytime soon." Consultants say that Greenwich has "decent perks, like health insurance, vision, profit sharing, and tuition reimbursement for job-specific courses, but nothing incredible." Another perk for technophiles – "We've got full Internet access and aren't monitored too much." In this small and dedicated firm, "a lot of people find it's not what they thought or wanted," but "a lot of people find they like it and go with it."
