The Scoop

In the olden days

In 1934, patriotic engineer Ferdinand Porsche designed a car for the people: in German, this became Volkswagen. Now the Volkswagen Group (VW) is Europe's largest automobile manufacturer. VW's Beetle became an American icon in the 1960s, and the company is currently promoting a new, retooled, more spacious Beetle alongside the Corrado, Golf, Jetta, Passat, Polo, and Vento models. Subsidiary brands include Audi, Seat (Spain), and Skoda (Czech Republic), and commercial vehicles under the Caravelle, Taro, and Transporter brands, which account for less than 10% of total VW sales.

Beep, beep...I'm back

VW has made a dramatic rebound in the years since the late 1980s, when sales in the U.S. hit new lows, and the company is now considering various locations in the South for a new manufacturing plant. In addition to offering consumer financing, VW currently produces 3.4 million vehicles each year, a number that has risen since the November 1999 introduction of the company's new and improved Beetle. Initially, Volkswagen expected a yearly sale of 50,000 cars in the United States and Canada but only one month after the car was made available, VW sold 61,000 in the U.S. alone.

Less happy in Europe

The Beetle's sales in Europe, however, have been disappointing for Volkswagen; it previously expected to sell 75,000 in 1999 but now plans to sell only half that amount. VW is even halting production of an additional plant it expected to build in Wolfsburg, Germany to provide for the anitcipated European demand. Volkswagen has, however, signed an $850 million agreement to develop new products for Rolls Royce over the next five years in its efforts to continue increasing profits by expanding its market.

Getting Hired

VW accepts resumes only for specific, advertised openings; the job hotline lists current opportunities. The company web site at www.vw.com also provides a listing of all available positions. Applicants can submit their resumes online or via regular mail or fax to the corporate headquarters and should be sure to include the job posting number named on the hotline or specified on the web page.

Our Survey Says

Formal yet enthusiastic

While the German parent company can be formal and stodgy, employees call VW's American subsidiary "a dynamic, social company in which young employees have a voice." While VW is known for being the highest-paying of the German auto makers, insiders say that "the benefit package is unremarkable." However, the relaxed atmosphere and impressive promotion opportunities keep new employees "satisfied." VW employees describe their morale as "consistently high" and are enthusiastic about the new Beetle strategy, which insiders opine will make VW "one of the hot companies of the decade."
