The Scoop

20th century success story

Founded by Soichiro Honda as an auto repair shop in 1928, Honda has epitomized the success story of 20th century Japan. After World War II, Honda produced motorized bicycles, then motorcycles, and, finally, in the 1960s, cars. In 1972 Honda began to make inroads in the American market with the Civic - an inexpensive, energy efficient, compact car - and became a permanent presence on the U.S. automotive scene.

Number 9, number 9, number 9

Honda is now the ninth-largest car manufacturer in the world, and its Accord model is the second-best selling car in the U.S. Recently, Honda has concentrated on expanding into Asian motorcycle markets, particularly China and India, the two largest markets for motorcycles in the world.

Ecologically correct, for an auto maker

Honda has so far clung to its environment-friendly image: offering low-to-no emission engines and offering no opposition to new federal emissions requirements in contrast to the noisy protests of its U.S. counterparts. By late 1999, Honda plans to introduce the first hybrid car powered by both gas and electricity.

Getting Hired

In the U.S., Honda is organized into three divisions: Research & Design, Manufacturing, and Sales. Applicants should be careful to direct their resume to the appropriate division. The Raymond, OH, office accepts resumes for Research & Design and Manufacturing. Applicants interested in Sales positions, however, should contact Honda's California office: 1919 Torrance Blvd., Torrance; CA 90501; (310) 783-2000. For detailed information on Sales openings, call the division's job hotline: (310) 783-2104.

Our Survey Says

Honda was one of the first companies to bring Japanese management techniques to the American marketplace. As a result, the company emphasizes teamwork and organization over individuality. "People are asked to work together and accomplish goals as a team, instead of going it alone," says one employee. Entry-level employees also enjoy "open and interactive" relationships with middle and upper management, and even the offices are designed to foster communication between and within departments. While some employees suggest that the company's organization makes it difficult to communicate between the various U.S. locations, they also say that Honda is "concerned about its workforce" and is "willing to listen to new ideas about how to improve its operations." Moreover, employees have access to "extraordinary advancement opportunities."
