Mega-life insurance provider Based in the historic Jefferson Building in downtown Greensboro, NC, the Jefferson-Pilot Corporation was formed in 1968 as a parent company for numerous subsidiaries engaged in insurance and communications. With over $45 billion of life insurance in force, Jefferson Pilot Life Insurance is the mega life insurance provider spawned from a 1987 merger of Jefferson Standard and Pilot Life, long successful Southern insurance providers and subsidiaries of the Jefferson-Pilot Corporation since 1968. Getting bigger - fast Among the fastest growing insurance providers in the United States, Jefferson-Pilot acquired sister company Alexander Hamilton Life in 1995, and recently acquired Chubb's life insurance division which has been renamed Jefferson Pilot Financial Insurance Company. And in December 1999 the company completed the acquisition of Guarantee Life Cos. for $298 million in cash. In March 2000 the company acquired Polaris, a financial planning broker. In June of that year Jefferson-Pilot announced it was combining Alexander Hamilton Life Insurance Co. of America, Guarantee Life Insurance Co., and Jefferson Financial Insurance Co. (formerly Chubb) to save money on taxes and to strengthen its brand name nationally. Diversified holdings Jefferson-Pilot Communications operates 16 radio stations, three television stations, and produces sports programming. The radio stations, located mainly in the Southeast, have suffered allegations of racial discrimination in recent years, though charges were not substantiated in federal court. The company's broadcast television station holdings became the object of scrutiny in 1999 when a group of North Carolina congressmen protested legislation that would limit financial institutions' holdings of other businesses to 15 percent.
