Moving all around CNF Inc. (formerly CNF Transportation) moves more than 16 million shipments each year for its U.S. and international customers. CNF, a national leader in air freight, trucking, and contract logistics, went by the name Consolidated Freightways until its recent decision to spin off its long-haul freight business as CF MotorFreight. Now, CNF is comprised of three main operating companies. Con-Way Transportation Services provides short- and intermediate-haul regional trucking for next-day or two-day service across the United States and into Canada and Mexico. Emery Worldwide is the nation's largest domestic and international integrated air freight carrier, serving 580 locations in the U.S. and across the world. Menlo Logistics offers full-service contract logistics including transportation, warehousing, and traffic management to clients like Coca-Cola, IBM, and AT&T. CNF also owns Road Systems, a maker of trucking equipment. Subsidiary expansion Emery Worldwide has been aggressively expanding both domestically and internationally over the past couple of years, while it seeks to be more of a premium service provider rather than a commodity carrier. In 1997, the United States Postal Service selected CNF Transportation to provide two-day mail delivery through the year 2002. As part of the deal, CNF, in coalition with its major subsidiary Emery Worldwide, succeeded in opening 10 processing centers on the East Coast and in creating a 13-state network as of 1999. Also, Emery Worldwide flew its first-ever DC-10 airplane as part of its goal to increase cargo capacity and efficiency for Emery Worldwide customers. In overseas news, the joint venture, Emery Worldwide (Thailand) Ltd was created with CTI Holdings Co., Ltd in 1999 to provide complete air and ocean freight services to Thailand. The venture is part of Emery Worldwide's desire to expand its influence into the Asia/Pacific region as is its new sea-air program from Asia to Latin America. The sea-air program further enhances Emery's reputation in shipping freight through air and over oceans. Also in the South Pacific region, Emery Worldwide opened a Sydney Logisitics Center to offer efficient, seemless delivery of goods throughout Australia. On the European continent, Emery has opened its first operations in Poland, providing customers with the company's multi-modal transportation services. A place to admire Portland, Oregon officials are pleased to announce CNF's decision to build a $35 million AdTech Center in the historic Northwest section of the city. Building should be completed by January 2001, and the center will serve as the company's administrative, financial, and technical operations. The new office compliments Fortune's 1999 independent survey, which named CNF Transportation as North America's most admired trucking enterprise.
CNF accepts resumes on a continual basis by regular mail and fax. The company can also be contacted via e-mail at jobs@cnf.com. Or for a simpler method, CNF now has a new career page on its web site, www.cnf.com. There are job listings and online resume submission options, as well as contact information. Applicants should detail their career interests and geographical preferences in their cover letters. Each of the company's major subsidiaries conducts its hiring separately - and each maintains a recruitment web page. These web pages provide information about current career opportunities across the U.S. The career page on the main web site also offers links to employment opportunities at CNF's other companies.
CNF insiders have high praise for the "team-oriented corporate culture" and the "leadership roles that each of its companies has taken in its respective industry." They attribute CNF's success to the "extreme care" that the company takes in recruiting "flexible employees who are eager to rise to new challenges." While insiders say that "the different operating units need to communicate with one another more effectively," they also comment that the "communication between levels of management within each unit has improved recently in both quantity and quality."
