The Scoop

Consulting the employees

Buck Consultants, Inc. is an employee benefit, actuarial, and compensation consulting firm. Its clients range from large multinational utilities and industrial corporations to small businesses and non-profit organizations. The firm's employee benefit plans cover more than ten million active and retired employees. Benefit plans-related assets total a whopping $400 billion. Buck is a subsidiary of Mellon Bank Corporation, one of the largest financial services companies and the owner of a $2.3 trillion asset base. Mellon provides banking, trust, and investment products to individuals, institutions, and businesses.

The Buck evolution

Buck was established in 1916 as an individual proprietorship that worked with states and large cities in establishing funded retirement systems. Buck Consultants, Inc. evolved from its entrepreneurial beginnings in 1970, when it became an employee-owned corporation. In its lifetime, the firm has pioneered new approaches to retirement plans, trusts for corporate employees, and global employee stock ownership plans. Through its partnership with the giant Pittsburgh-based Mellon Bank, Buck Consultants looks forward to becoming a leader in the booming business of corporate benefits outsourcing. In 1999, the New York City-based firm counted 2,900 domestic professionals in its ranks and over 5,000 pension/benefit plans.

No longer bucking by itself

In February 1999, the superannuation administration and consulting firm NSP Lewis signed a letter of intent to merge with Buck Consultants. Formed in 1996 by the management buyout of the NSP Consulting business, NSP is Australia-based; Buck, meanwhile, has been working in Australia since 1989. The new company, NSP Buck, is expected to have nearly $10 billion in funds under its administration, as well as almost 800 clients.

Getting Hired

Interested applicants should send a resume by fax or mail to Buck's New Jersey office: 500 Plaza Drive, Secaucus, NJ 07096-1533. Since Buck has dozens of offices worldwide, applicants should indicate their geographic preferences. Cover letters should indicate a special interest in compensation and benefit consulting (and not, say, strategic consulting). For more information, see the jobs section of Buck's web site or www.buckconsultants.com/careers/index.asp.

Our Survey Says

The scary merger - seems OK

There was "some apprehension" among Buck Consulting's employees regarding the merger with Mellon Bank, but it "hasn't affected us - yet," and consultans report "business as usual" at the firm. Employees at Buck are "constantly challenged" and one remarks that "employee benefits consulting is unexpectedly interesting."

A good work environment

The hours are "more manageable" at Buck than at other consulting firms - "37 hours a week," - and "even those hours are flexible." Employees work in "management teams," which is "ideal, because it builds camaraderie" and "nurtures friendships." The dress code is "business casual with casual Fridays." There are "several women supervisors" at Buck, and the male-female ratio is "about 50/40" which "beats most firms." The salary is "not terribly high" but the "bright people" and "conscientious management" at Buck "are more important than a few cents' less pay."
