Nostalgic for the fabulous eighties
The largest provider of school and office supplies in the U.S., Mead was founded in 1882 with a single Ohio mill. The company expanded its product line over the next century by acquiring numerous mills and production plants across the U.S. Mead currently focuses its efforts on the production and distribution of home, school, and office supplies (responsible for the majority of its sales); packaging paper; and coated and uncoated papers. The company?s 1970s foray into electronic publishing resulted in the highly successful LEXIS (the largest legal research database) and NEXIS (the largest news and business information database). Following flagging sales, Mead recently begun to sell off a number of its unprofitable businesses, including its electronic data services, and Zellerbach distribution business to International Paper. The company has also begun to engage in a large-scale rapid cost reduction strategy. Now, Mead hopes to recapture the glory days of the 1980s, when its school products dominated the market.
Fortuna's wheel rising?
The company saw a surge in profits in 1999. A price increase in certain types of paper, lower inventories, improved export, and a recovering Asia all helped the firm. In addition, the company has bought new mills in Maine, upstate New York, and England and has expanded its Stevenson, Alabama mill. The company is also modernizing and streamlining. Each site now does its own financial services work; and the company is spending $100 million over four years to upgrade the computer system it uses to keep track of operations. Mead was also recently named a top 500 e-business innovator by PC Week Online
