Revving up the industry
Founded by Chauffeur Clessie Cummins in 1919, Cummins Engines is the world's leading designer and maker of mid-range and heavy-duty diesel engines. Cummins' largest engines produce 30 percent of its sales, and the bulk of its remaining sales comes from mid-range engines used in trucks, power generators, buses, marine vehicles, and industrial equipment. Cummins is also preparing to meet the demands of new, tougher fuel emission standards by developing cleaner and more efficient engines and fuel systems, including the turbo-diesel engine for the Dodge Ram pickup. The company opened its first European plant in 1956, and has emphasized its international sales ever since, with foreign sales accounting for 40 percent of Cummins' annual revenue. The company also and it has entered into agreements with foreign automakers like Saab and Fiat to ensure that its international sales remain robust.
Cleaning up its act
However, most analysts agree that the company is in need of a financial tune-up. In 1998, the company took a $114 million charge for restructuring. Also in 1998, the Environmental Protection Agency fined Cummins $25 million, accusing it of cheating on emissions tests, despite the company's vehement denial of the charges. As a result of these problems, the company's stock has not been performing well. In 1998, the company lost $21 million on sales of $6.3 billion. However, the company hopes major strategic moves, such as its 1998 purchase of diesel exhaust and air fitration company Nelson Industries, as well as its sale of its Atlas Crankshaft subsidiary, will improve performance.

Cummins accepts resumes by fax and regular mail. Many of its new hires, even those in corporate management, have some background in engineering. However, the company also hires those with business training in finance and operations management. Applicants progress through a structured interviewing process that includes behavior assessment.
Unpretentious environment, high-profile projects
Cummins employees describe the company as "without pretense," "down-to-earth" and "straightforward."
While the "flat management structure" means that there are fewer opportunities for promotion than some would like, it also means that new employees "contribute immediately" to "high profile projects." This "hands-on leadership environment" provides everyone with opportunities, which sometimes include chances for international travel. Employees appreciate that Cummins has "taken pains" to be ecologically responsible throughout the globe and has become involved in local communities.
