The Scoop

Geographically diverse

KeyCorp is one of the leading lenders to small- and medium-sized businesses in the nation. The product of a 1994 merger between Society Corporation and the "old" KeyCorp, the company is also one of the country's most geographically-diverse banks. KeyCorp has branches in 14 Northern states and trust operations in Texas and Florida. The bank has recently added consumer finance to its two more established business lines, corporate banking and community banking. KeyCorp's "branchless banking" has been a hit with consumers seeking mortgages, credit cards, education loans, or auto financing.

Spruced-up image

Since the 1994 merger, KeyCorp has been cutting costs and reorganizing its business by closing and selling many of its rural branches and concentrating on its urban business in Northern cities. The bank has also acquired new businesses in investment managing, automobile financing, and student loans. With a new advertising and marketing push that has included the KeyArena stadium in Seattle, KeyCorp has spruced up its image while responding effectively to changes in the banking industry.

Getting Hired

KeyCorp's job hotline provides information on some currently available positions, usually at the company's headquarters in Cleveland. Those applying for one of these jobs should refer to the "requisition number" in their cover letter. The company's employment Web page, located at www.keybank.com/hr/keydept.html, has additional information about the various KeyCorp departments and also gives instructions on submitting resumes via e-mail. KeyCorp keeps all resumes, whether sent by regular mail, e-mail, or fax, in its database for at least one year.

In general, KeyCorp insiders claim that "the interview process is not stressful." Those applying for technical positions, however, are required to take a "TechCheck online test to identify current proficiency."
