Among the top 5 The recent explosion of Internet traffic has UUNet Technologies seeing dollar signs. With more than $250 million in annual sales, the Fairfax, Virginia-based company is one of the top 5 providers of commercial Internet services. UUNet was founded in 1987 by techno-wiz Richard Adams, inventor of SLIP, a modem connection that allows individual PC users to connect to the Internet. Initially providing Internet access and services to universities and research organizations, the company introduced AlterNet in 1990, to provide Internet access to corporations. UUNet merged with MFS Communications in 1995, and became a fully-owned subsidiary of WorldCom the same year. The company now offers Internet access to companies for their own use, and to online service providers including America Online and CompuServe. UUNET targets small and mid-size businesses, and can typically add a T-1 line within 48 hours. A virtual smorgasbord of networking fun, UUNet offers security products, consulting, training, and content and hosting services for the Web, in addition to providing Internet access for the Microsoft Network. UUNet's 1997 announcement that it would start charging smaller Internet companies for its carrier services was met with strong criticism from the industry. UUniverse-wide reach UUNET has spent $100 million building data storage centers around the world in 2000, opening new centers across the nation and in Asia and Europe. The company now has 30 internet data centers online. The centers offer area businesses technical advantages like direct access to UUNET's global network, maximum bandwidth flexibility, and continual electrical power to the data center. UUNET is also adding stronger security and greater network access control to its dial-up services, and increasing its U.S. network to 10 gigabits per second. The upgrade to the highest transmission speeds available will quadruple UUNET's current network speed.
Look on UUNet's web site at http://www.uunet.com/contact/employment for a complete listing of international job openings and descriptions. With positions available in a range of departments, qualifications and requirements vary. Apply online or send, fax, or e-mail resumes to UUNet's home office in Fairfax, VA.
Described as "a brilliant place to work," employees praise UUNet's "warm and comfy" environment and their friendly coworkers. Though one employee mentions occasional "tension-causing office politics," he notes, "compared to the other jobs I've worked, it's a great place to work." Benefits include medical coverage, a 401(k) plan, and three weeks of paid vacation per year. Some employees have a lot to say about the change due to UUNet's growth and new corporate ownership. "Originally, UUNet was not very corporate at all - we had nerf weapon fights in the halls. But then we went public, and it slowly changed," says one. But some things never change at a high-tech firm. "There's still a lot of geeks here."
