Talk of the town Founded in 1996, Talkcity.com provides both online communities and e-services for businesses and consumers. Specifically, services include producing online events, conducting online market research, and designing customized communities. At the heart of Talk City's web site, www.talkcity.com, is a network of online communities that includes approximately 20 subject categories and 50 community themes. Here, viewers can register for free and enter community chat rooms on topics ranging from college, to business and finance, to collectibles, to cities and travel. To keep all this chatting under control, Talk City employs over 2,000 trained community moderators. Some 270 of these moderators are paid, while the vast majority participate on a volunteer basis. The moderators are primarily responsible for answering questions, directing the course and subject matter of conversations, and even promoting vendors' products. Banking on buying power Speaking of vendors, Talk City hopes to boost its e-commerce offerings in the near future. Its Talk City Store is already home to thousands of products in the following categories: Gifts & Seasonal Items, Computer Software, Computer Accessories, Computer Hardware, Luggage & Leather, Just for Kidz, Collectibles, and Home & Living. The company partners with about 40 prestigious businesses, including AT&T Worldnet, Cox Interactive Media, Freedom Communications, The Hearst Corporation, Microsoft's MSN, Microsoft's Web TV Network, The National Broadcasting Company, Starbucks, and Sony Music. TalkCity went public in July 1999.
