Not enough sports? Before SportsLine USA was founded in 1994, founder and CEO Michael Levy was told that the media was already super-saturated with sports information, and that another venue was unnecessary. Today, this online service is one of the leading Internet web sites providing sports-related information and entertainment. SportsLine, whose principal web site, sportsline.com, features real time info, has created and marketed official fan clubs for superstars like Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods. SportsLine also features chat sessions with these and other sports greats. Big-company backing In 1997, the company's name changed to CBS SportsLine when it struck a $60 million, five-year deal with CBS. The alliance includes the agreement that that CBS will provide SportsLine with $57 million in television ads. The company hopes to increase the number of sports fans who use the Internet. Future strategies may include incorporating entertainment into its selling points. SportsLine is negotiating with a major studio to create a TV program that would initially be broadcast on the Internet and would eventually make its way to television and the movies. Despite competition from powerhouses such as ESPN SportsZone and CNN/SI, SportsLine has already indicated that it ready to play hardball!
