The Scoop

One-stop shopping for businesses

You want to get your business on the Internet, but you're still befuddled by the blinking clock on your VCR. Where do you go? If you run a medium- to large-size corporation, you might turn to Globix Corporation, the one-stop shop for ISP customers. For businesses low on time to shop around for Internet services, Globix provides everything from web hosting, co-location (providing monitoring and space for servers), and streaming audio/video, to 3-D animation, e-commerce services, and corporate training classes.

Father-son duo going public

Founded by Marc Bell in 1989 - when he was just 21 - Globix has enjoyed increasing demand since Bell began emphasizing the company's Internet services focus in the mid-1990s. He also brought his father, Robert Bell, on board as EVP and CFO in 1994 (Papa Bell switched his title to EVP of business development in 1999). The company went public in March 1999.

Build me a SuperPOPS

Offering data centers for its clients' outsourced servers, Globix realized that it needed to open a branch close to its California clients, and leased a 60,000 square foot "campus" in Santa Clara, CA in November 1998. The following year, Globix opened an office in London, which will serve as its European headquarters. It also built three "SuperPOPS" in London, San Francisco, and New York. (SuperPOPS are buildings especially designed for housing servers, with air conditioning, raised floors, fire suppression systems, and power generators.) An $80 million investment from Dallas-based venture capital firm Hicks, Muse, Tate & Furst (November 1999) along with $250 million in high-yield debt (February 2000) should help Globix expand its computer space to more than a million square feet by the end of 2001.

Streaming media leader

Globix has been in charge of Webcasting several high-profile events which have helped establish the company as a leader in streaming media. In February 2000 the company was tapped by Microsoft to Webcast Big Bill's keynote address launching Windows 2000. Other notable Webcasts produced by Globix include Boxing.com's live Webcast of the Tyson/Francis fight, a live Webcast of Bon Jovi from the band's recording studio, and A&E's Live by Request show with the Eurythmics. Web sites hosted by Globix include music.com, yellowpages.com, and lifetimetv.com.
