Founded in 1976, Menlo Ventures currently manages approximately $1.2 billion in capital and specializes in communications, Internet, and software companies. The firm's most recent fund, Menlo Ventures VIII, is a $500 million fund that focuses on development stage investments in these industries. One of Silicon Valley's most respected VC firms, Menlo is located on famous Sand Hill Road.

Investment strategy: Taking the lead

According to reports by Venture Capital Journal, Menlo is the lead investor in 80 to 90 percent of its deals. Menlo invests in companies at all stages of development, but generally funds early stage companies. A typical Menlo investment ranges from $4 million to $10 million. Menlo Ventures VIII, a $500 million dollar fund, is the largest of Menlo's funds to date. Menlo VII closed with $250 million in 1996, Menlo Ventures IV closed with $175 million in 1993 and Menlo Ventures V closed at $110 million in 1988. Each of Menlo's funds invests in approximately 30 to 35 companies.

Portfolio

In more than two decades of operations, Menlo Ventures has invested in over 200 companies. In addition to software, communications, and Internet companies, Menlo has also invested in health care, medical device and semiconductor technolgy concerns. Portfolio investments include Bluegill Technologies, RC Networks, Eve.com, InfoSeek, Woodside Biomedical, Rockettalk, Inc., Ascend Communications, Gilead Sciences, and Hotmail.
