Venture capital's whopper

Chase Capital Partners has approximately $15 billion in capital under management and invests in sectors ranging from information technology to retail and consumer products. Since its founding in 1984, CCP has closed over 900 individual transactions. 1999 was a particularly productive year. According to reports in The New York Times, CCP provided "$2 billion in venture and buyout financing in 1999, including $800 million for investments in technology, telecommunications, and media companies." Investment strategy: no shortage of funds Chase offers financing to companies at every possible maturity, including management buyouts and recapitalizations, growth equity, co-investments, mezzanine round financing, and industry consolidations and restructurings. In terms of regional focus - CCP has a truly global presence. With offices in Europe, Asia, and North and South America, CCP seeks quality investments everywhere. In western Europe, CCP makes investments ranging in size from $5 to $150 million. The firm closed a $521 million fund in May 1999 to invest in companies in Southeast Asia. General partner Jeffrey Walker recently told The New York Times that CCP was the "largest Internet investor in Latin America."

Portfolio: pleasing everybody

Given CCP's size and resources, it's not surprising that the firm's portfolio consists of 400 companies. Sectors covered (and percentage of total portfolio) are as follows: media/telecommunications (22 percent), financial services (3 percent), life sciences (11 percent), real estate (4 percent), technology/information services (18 percent), energy/natural resources (4 percent), industrial/auto (14 percent), chemicals (3 percent), retail & consumer products (17 percent), other investments (4 percent).

Partners: large bank, large firm, large team

CCP's team is comprised of 95 professionals. Heading the firm is managing general partner Jeffrey C. Walker, who helped found the firm in 1984. Walker is joined by executive partner Mitchell J. Blutt, M.D. Dr. Blutt, who moonlights as a medical professor, also sits on the Board of the National Venture Capital Association.
