The Scoop

From baggies to autos

Tenneco's twin divisions ? Tenneco Automotive and Tenneco Packaging ? manufacture and distribute some of the most popular products in their respective industries. Tenneco Automotive makes Walker exhaust systems (the world's leader) and Monroe shocks. Tenneco Packaging's products include Hefty and Baggies as well industrial packaging and boxes. Both businesses are expanding overseas. The company has begun joint ventures to produce auto parts in India and China, and its packaging division has acquired plastics and packaging businesses in the United Kingdom and Holland.

Acquiring more

Tenneco began as Tennessee Gas and Transmission, a division of the Chicago Corporation. In the 1950s and 1960s the company managed a large petroleum and chemical business, and in 1963 established its headquarters in Houston. During that same decade it acquired its first packaging business and Newport News Shipbuilding, the largest manufacturer of naval ships in the country. In the 1990s, however, Tenneco sold its energy businesses, spun off the shipbuilding division, and moved to a new Connecticut headquarters. By concentrating on its two remaining businesses, the company has been able to improve its operations and search for the right acquisitions, such as Mobil Plastics, which Tenneco purchased in 1993, and Richter Manufacturing, a producer of packaging supplies, in 1998. With the acquisition of Richter Manufacturing, Tenneco was able to expand its manufacturing locations into California and Washington. Tenneco also formed a joint venture to produce exhaust products for automobiles with Shanghai Tractor and Internal Combustion Engine Corporation in 1999. Furthermore, in the same year, Tenneco Packaging and Sentinel Products Corp. formed Sentinel Polyolefins to produce foams used in the medical, industrial and automotive industries.

A strategic split

Tenneco announced in 1999 that it would be dividing its packaging and automotive businesses into separate companies to hopefully boost its recently dwindling profits. The company is rumored to be considering selling its automotive division in the near future as well.

Getting Hired

Tenneco's hiring is decentralized; applicants should obtain the specific address of the operation to which they wish to apply. Applicants can also consult the company's web page at www.tenneco.com/human for a description of available positions within the company. Applicants who are interested in working at the headquarters in Greenwich, CT should apply to the Human Resources department there. Tenneco has acquired several new product lines recently, which have put it in the public eye; as a result, the competition for open positions has become "stiff."

Our Survey Says

Tenneco insiders are excited about the company's new "aggressive" stance toward "development and acquisition." Tenneco offers employees "real empowerment" and the opportunity to "make a real impact on the growth and prosperity of the company." Some call the corporate culture "formal," but they also say that their "transplanted Texas" colleagues are a "refreshing group in Greenwich, CT." Tenneco has a "hardworking office, but everyone is able to balance work with their personal lives."
