The Scoop

A bright company

National Services Industries (NSI) might be more aptly named "Diversified" Service Industries. The parent company of the largest lighting company in the U.S., NSI also owns a sanitation and chemical company, linen and uniform rental companies, and an envelope company. Its Lithonia Lighting subsidiary is North America's leading manufacturer of lighting fixtures for commercial, industrial, and residential markets. That company, together with other lighting subsidiaries, generates 55 percent of NSI's annual revenues.

Diversification through acquisition

The company's Zep Manufacturing and Selig Chemical divisions produce chemical products, such as cleaners, sanitizers, polishes, degreasers, and water treatments. NSI's National Linen Service and National Uniform Service rent table and bed linens and uniforms, and its Atlantic Envelope subsidiary is a leading Southern producer of custom envelopes and office products. NSI's extremely diversified operations are a result of an agressive policy of acquisitions. Some of its most recent acquisitions include the February 1999 acquisition of Gilmore Envelope Corporation, the April 1999 acquisition of California-based Peerless Lighting Corporation, and the June 1999 acquisition of Atlanta-based Holophane Corporation (an industrial lighting maker). National Service Industries' current rate of growth has only been slowed by what it calls "A comedy of errors" at a new lighting manufacturing plant in Mexico. NSI says that the drop in earnings will be a one time only decline.

Getting Hired

National Service Industries accepts resumes for positions at its corporate headquarters, and the headquarters will also furnish applicants with contact information for its subsidiaries. Zep Manufacturing's employment web page, located at www.zepmfg.com/Opportunities/index.html, offers applicants an on-line application form as well as other hiring information. Zep is currently conducting an aggressive recruiting campaign to enlarge its salesforce.

Our Survey Says

"Impressive career development opportunities"

Several National Service Industries subsidiaries are undergoing a "transition period" that has included "important changes in top management," as well as "limited" downsizing efforts. However, employees call NSI a "rapidly growing company" and predict that it will "continue to offer impressive career development opportunities" in the future. While some employees call the corporate culture "hierarchical," others praise NSI's "smooth operational procedures" as well as the "superb communication skills" of the company's upper management.

Although National Service Industries is highly diversified, workers said "NSI is a growing company with many opportunities in many fields." Some subsidiaries are suffering from "management changes," but NSI remains "a good starting point" for many careers.
