In the fall of 1963, Mary Kay Ash and her husband took their life savings of $5,000 and founded Mary Kay Cosmetics, Inc. With the help of their 20-year-old son, Mary Kay bought a cosmetic formula and began packaging her first product line. Disillusioned by her experiences in the male-dominated workforce of the time, she founded her company on the principle of giving women an equal chance to succeed in the workforce. The credo remains today: "God first, Family second, Career third." Over the years, the company has grown considerably, now operating in 29 countries all over the world. It has been named one of Fortune's 100 Best Companies to Work for in America three times - in 1984, 1993, and 1998. The company has expanded globally, and its product lines have grown to include a men's line, fragrances, sun care products, and even dietary supplements. Although the company experienced serious financial difficulties in the mid-'80s, it has regained stability in recent years. Today, Mary Kay is America's bestselling brand of facial skin care and color cosmetics, controlling about nine percent of both markets.
One of Mary Kay's most noted practices is giving away pink Cadillacs to top salespeople, a practice that dates back to 1969. Today Mary Kay has the largest commercial fleet of GM passenger cars in the world. On its 35th anniversary in 1998, the "Mary Kay edition" of the white GMC Jimmy SUV was added to the fleet, which also includes the pink Grand Prix and the red Grand Am.
